Frontier Drive Public Meeting

Frontier Drive Improvement Study - Public Meeting

The City of Staunton and County of Augusta, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Transportation, will conduct a public open house on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 from 4:00- 6:00 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room in the Augusta County Government Center, 18 Government Center Lane, Verona, Virginia. to consider proposed alternatives for improving the road alignment and configuration of Frontier Drive from Route 11 to Route 250.  A map of the study area can be downloaded here.  You may also download maps of Alternative 1Alternative 2, and Alternative 3

At approximately two miles in length and designated an urban collector in Staunton and rural major collector in Augusta County, Frontier Drive serves as an important link between Route 11 and Route 250. Frontier Drive is generally 2-lanes, approximately 19 feet wide, with a current traffic count of 7700 AADT. Conservative projected ADT are approximately 15,000 by year 2030. Frontier Drive serves important commercial developments in both the City of Staunton and Augusta County, literally linking County and City commercial sectors, as well as rapidly expanding residential neighborhoods.

A recent traffic study found the intersection of Frontier Drive and Route 250 operates under Level of Service F conditions. This same study indicated inadequate storage lane lengths for the intersection of Frontier Drive and Route 11. It has been recommended that corridor analysis be conducted considering not only arterial capacity needs, but the needs of intersections as well. While road improvements are clearly called for, the nature and extent of those improvements will need to be defined. The goals of the Frontier Drive Alignment and Configuration Improvement Study is to determine the extent and nature of improvements necessary to facilitate the movement of traffic (automobile, pedestrian and bicycle) and establish a range of costs estimates for those improvements. As a result of the study, the City of Staunton and Augusta County can jointly begin to work to develop funding options, as well as identify more detailed planning and engineering considerations.
