ACFR is asking your help to save lives and property. Join the Adopt-A-Hydrant program.

Augusta County Fire-Rescue (ACFR) is asking for your help in keeping fire hydrants that are close to your home or business clear of snow in the winter and free of weeds and shrubbery in the summer by participating in the Adopt-A-Hydrant program.

To take part in the Adopt-A-Hydrant program, Fire-Rescue asks that you:

  • Shovel the area around the fire hydrant after each snowfall. Clear the area approximately three (3) feet around the hydrant as well as a path from the street or roadway to the fire hydrant so that the hydrant is visible and accessible.
  • During the summer months, please make sure that the same three-foot path around the hydrant is free of weeds, shrubbery, flowerbeds, etc and can be seen easily.

Did you know that a fire doubles in size every fifteen (15) seconds? This fact underscores the importance of the ability for emergency vehicles to gain easy access to a fire hydrant as quickly as possible. Lives and property are saved when water is applied quickly.

You can consider adopting a hydrant and keeping its access clear even when it is not on your property.  Simply talk with the property owner and ask them for permission. The property owner may even want to help.

Please do not perform any repairs to the hydrants, paint, personalize, or change the appearance of the hydrant in any way. This program is strictly voluntary and involves no liabilities or responsibilities beyond the above suggestions.

We would love to see pictures of you clearing and posing with your hydrant. You can use #myACFRhydrant and tag ACFR on Facebook @AugustaCountyFireRescue or Augusta County on Twitter or Facebook @AugustaCountyVA.
