The Verona Pedestrian Improvement project will provide ADA compliant sidewalks along Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) and US Route 11 (Lee Highway). The segment along Route 612 will connect the existing sidewalk west of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad to the Park and Ride located on Route 1906 (Lodge Lane). The segment along US Route 11 will run from the City of Staunton to the existing Sidewalk at Route 940 (Dick Huff Lane) and will connect to the Augusta County Government Center. Sidewalks along all segments except for Lodge Lane will be constructed behind existing curb and gutter and will have new ADA compliant curb ramps and minor entrance adjustments and reconstruction. Along Lodge Lane, new curb and gutter will be installed. Pedestrian push buttons and signal heads will be provided for proposed crossings at traffic signals along the project.
At a Citizen Information Meeting on November 14, 2019, the engineering office received public feedback which was supportive of the design plans presented.
After several grant applications to secure adequate funding, a Construction Contract was awarded to A&J Development & Excavating in July of 2023. Construction is anticipated to begin in October 2023 with completion Spring 2024.
